This dish came about from me experimenting in the kitchen. I like Sweet and Sour Chicken that you’d get from a Chinese restaurant, but I prefer when the chicken isn’t breaded and fried (Shocker – a Southerner preferring something NOT fried.)
So I went into this experiment with the vision of chicken coated in my favorite sauce. The whole reason I love chicken nuggets and Popeye’s chicken strips is the sweet and sour sauce. Is this weird? Maybe. That’s me.
If you’re ordering nuggets, you’re getting sauce – I don’t care if you’re not going to use it. I’ll use it. I’ll take it home with me and save it in this particularly small drawer that’s about useless for anything else but holding sweet and sour sauce because it’s so narrow. Seriously, there is a small drawer and cabinet between the dishwasher and refrigerator, and that’s the only thing I’ve ever put in there in the 2 years we’ve lived in this house.
My favorite sauce is from Popeye’s because it has red pepper flakes in it. Gives it a nice kick, but any sauce will do – it’s still good! If you prefer to be Not-Weird (Why would you want to be not weird??
), you don’t have to save your fast food restaurant condiments, you can just head over to the ethnic aisle at your local grocery store and pick up a bottle of sweet and sour sauce.
Now that my weird love of sweet and sour sauce is out there for all the world to see, I’ll move on to the recipe. (you’re thinking: ’bout time!)
Susie Q’s Sweet N Sour Chicken
Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Servings: 4
- 4 servings of rice (usually 1 cup of dry rice)
- 1 lb of chicken breast cut into bite size pieces
- 1 16 oz bag of frozen stir fry vegetables
- 1/2 cup sweet and sour sauce
- 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
Cook the rice according to the package directions. While the rice is cooking, cut the chicken into bite size pieces. Put the oil in a large pan and swirl to coat the bottom. Put the chicken in the pan and season with salt, pepper, and soy sauce. Cook chicken on medium-high heat until cooked through.
Add the vegetables and stir. Once the rice is cooked, add to the chicken and vegetables. Then stir in the sweet and sour sauce, coating everything well. Cook until the vegetables are heated through and serve! Enjoy!

Hi! I’m Susan, and like many of you, I have several roles. I’m a wife, mom,
It’s not weird to love sauce that much! Even if I don’t order nuggets, I request the sauce for my fries!
I like dipping my fries in it, too! Glad to know I’m not alone.
I have never found a sweet and sour sauce as good as McDonald’s. I’ve tried all they have in the ethnic aisle, but they just aren’t good. Have you found a good brand?
Honestly, I’ve never bought any. I’ve only made it with the sauces from fast food establishments (I’m weird, I know) My only suggestion is to make sure you’re getting sweet and sour sauce and not duck sauce. They look a lot a like and are right next to each other on the ethnic aisle.
